The Birkenbach farm in Danzwiesen, near Fulda, Germany, has remained within the family. Frank Birkenbach, Jr. has corresponded with the descendants of August's oldest brother, Josef. These descendants include Albin Birkenbach, who lived on the family farm until he passed away in 1997; Maria Birkenbach Assel; and Richard Birkenbach. Frank first met Maria and Richard in 1982. Maria remembers writing letters for her grandfather, Josef, to send to his brother, August, in the United States. Richard Birkenbach describes Danzwiesen as a "small place on the Rhn about 20 kilometers from the city of Fulda."
In 1981 Richard Birkenbach included a photograph of the Birkenbach farm in one of his letters to Frank Birkenbach, Jr.
August Birkenbach immigrated to the United States in 1877. It is believed that he first settled in Clyde, MO, where he worked on the construction of the Conception Abbey, before moving to Verona, where he met Catherine, apparently through a mutual friend who was a cousin of Catherine's or whose wife was a cousin of Catherine's.
Catherine Leitle was about twelve years old when she came to the United States in 1876 or 1877 with her mother, Margaretha, and her younger brother, Joseph. After settling in Verona, MO, it is believed Catherine was later employed by the Keet family in Springfield to care for their children. This experience also offered Catherine the opportunity to learn to speak English. We are searching for additional information for the Leitl/Leitle family.
August's two oldest sons, Charles and Joseph, changed the spelling of their surname some time after settling in Kansas.
